Community technology advisory commission
Minutes
Members present: Rudyard Dyer, Nat Johnson, Shane Leverenz, Kayla Stautz,
Benjamin Straus
Members absent: Rolf Peterson, Konnor Slaats
Staff liaison: Jacque Smith, communications and technology director
1. Call to order – roll call
Meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m.
2. Approval of minutes – June 25, 2025
Johnson moved, Stautz seconded approval. Motion approved 4-0 by Dyer, Johnson,
Leverenz, Stautz. Straus arrived following approval of minutes.
3. Work session
Commission members shared 2-3 ideas each, an assignment from the previous meeting.
Ideas included responsible AI in government (applications and policies); evaluating and
enhancing engagement with city technology (how are residents engaged, app or
improved mobile website); city technology workshop series (community education on
available technology); technology assistance and advice (education on scams, general
tips and tricks); monthly city technology tip; DIY crash course (linking to online content);
technology in/at playgrounds (use case, accessibility, equipment); technology programs
and training (partnering with organizations and school district); online new
homeowner/resident experience; participatory budgeting; technology in public safety
(policy research on new technology – facial recognition, license plate readers); future of
technology in cities; technology communication tools; and technology in cities one-
pagers for city council/educating our city leaders.
From those ideas, two themes were identified: education and engagement. It was
agreed that a group for each theme would work on a draft advisory form to city council
on these topics. Groups are Stautz, Johnson and Dyer for education and Leverenz, Straus
and Slaats for engagement. The commission will work together at its Aug. 27 meeting to
finalize the advisory form.
4. Update on workplan items
Smith discussed the progress of the city website redesign and the opportunity for a
CTAC member to participate in an upcoming user experience work session; more details
to come. Smith also shared the direction for school-board appointed commission
members, who will be transitioned to regular commission members this fall. CTAC has
one school-board appointed seat, currently held by Peterson, who has chosen not to
seek reappointment. A new member will be appointed this fall by the city council.
5. Next meeting: Aug. 27
Members agreed to meet Aug. 27 rather than waiting for the September meeting.
6. Adjournment
Johnson moved, Leverenz seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting, all voted in favor.
Meeting ended at 7:12 p.m.
