Housing in SLP City Schools Proposal for Cultural Competency June -2001 Cultural Competency A Series of Forums presented by St. Louis Park City and Schools Culture is used because it implies the integrated patterns of human behavior that includes thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups… competence is used because it implies having the capacity to function in a particular way: the capacity to function within the context of culturally integrated patterns of human behavior defined by a group… Cultural competence is a developmental process that occurs along a continuum. 1 Project Goals (What): • Better prepare members of the school community to accept demographic changes. • Promote an understanding of the demographic changes and cultural differences that make up our schools and community populations. • Improve and enhance the conversation around diversity and difference • Promote opportunities to learn about different cultures and ethnic groups residing in St. Louis Park in particular, and gain a broader knowledge of the demographic changes in Minnesota and the nation. How: • A series of forums or conversations scheduled around the city, open to the public; no fee • Forums that facilitate understanding and also provide an opportunity for questions and answers. • Use of local and regional experts; panel discussions, individual presentations Why: • student demographics in the St. Louis Park Schools are changing; minority student population has increased over a five-year period to 18.9%. • School District ESL population has increased over the last five-year period • SLP city resident demographics have changed over a ten period; the recent Census 2000 demonstrates the change in the community. 1 From Defining Cultural Competence. Attendance at forums and conversations by numbers and groups (seniors, parents, community, staff of schools and city) 2. Compilation of recommendations and/or comments from attendees regarding what next steps to take. 3. Recommendations for further opportunities to train and educate staff and community.
