Call to Order Chair Arnold called the meeting to order at 7:06 pm. A. Roll Call Commissioners Present: DJ Hamm, Greg Gidden, Katherine Arnold, Margaret Rog and Bob Griggs. Staff Present: Staff Liaison Breanna Freedman and Sgt. Jon Parker B. Approval of Agenda Commissioner Griggs made a motion to approve the meeting agenda. Commissioner Gidden seconded the motion. The motion passed 5-0. C. Approval of Minutes It was moved by Commissioner Gidden to approve the September 20, 2016 meeting minutes. It was seconded by Commissioner Rog. The motion passed 5-0. II. Bias/Hate Crime Report Guest city staff person, Sgt. Jon Parker, shared the two recent bias/hate crime reports. The commission discussed if the reports should III. City Racial Equity Initiative Chair Arnold noted the meeting with City Council regarding the race and equity initiative was good and informative for knowing what the city is doing The Commission then discussed what role the HRC would possibly have with the city’s race and equity initiative, and wants to review the HRC goals and mission set in the bylaws. Chair Arnold suggested to commissioner to review the bylaws IV. Coffee and Culture Chat Commissioner Hamm shared concern regarding the conversation being solely about the signs. Hamm proposed an event in the spring, a showing the Netflix documentary of “Thirteenth” Commissioner Arnold said that Angie, who works with St. Louis Park Community Education, will be co facilitating the event Commissioner Rog heard from a resident who feels strongly about the HRC event and the signs. She will be connected to Commissioner Arnold for providing an opening statement at the event Commissioner Gidden asked how the event will be marketed to the community, and suggested creating a dissemination plan Commissioner Hamm suggested having a survey after the event and asked if the HRC could collect emails for notifying residents of future HRC events Commissioner Rog asked about the marketing flyer, commenting that the coffee image doesn’t give the best description of what will be happening at the event Commissioner Gidden asked if there are other ways the HRC can continue the conversation with the community after the event that wouldn’t be labor intensive. Commissioner Gidden asked if the HRC could have a discussion regarding social media presence Commissioner Hamm commented this could be an issue with having one commissioner speaking on behalf of the entire commission, and the logistics of having each commissioner involved in social media Chair Arnold recommended having the comment cards passed out at the event for attendees to fill out, with an option to leave an email address The commission decided to market the event via word of mouth and not print flyers to distribute and post throughout the community V. Next Meeting Tuesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. in City Hall Commissioner Gidden motioned to adjourn Commissioner Rog seconded the motion The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:15 p.m.
