Human Rights Commission
Minutes – June 21, 2016
Westwood Room, City Hall
I. Call to Order
Chair Curtin called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.
A. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Bob Griggs, Katherine Arnold, Savannah Curtin, Anita Beaton,
Greg Gidden, Michelle Kornblit, and Margaret Rog
Staff: Breanna Freedman
B. Approval of Agenda
It was moved by Chair Curtin. The Agenda was then seconded by Commissioner Arnold,
to approve the agenda, as presented. The motion passed 7-0.
C. Approval of Minutes
It was moved by Chair Curtin, seconded by Commissioner Kornblit, to approve the
minutes of May 16, 2016, as presented. The motion passed 7-0.
II. Introduction of New Commissioners
The commission introduced themselves; three new commissioners to join the Human Rights
Commission.
Commissioner Beaton noted the school district’s diversity and inclusion, specifically as it
pertains to the high school senior graduation ceremony.
III. Joint HRC/PAC/MAC Event
Staff Liaison Freedman shared that event held jointly by the HRC/MAC/PAC would be
Thursday, July 19. The HRC is in charge of their own table and the kid’s craft table
Staff Liaison Freedman will create a spreadsheet for commissioners signing up to be at the
event.
Commissioner Rog had a suggestion for the table, to have a big white board that will have
questions for attendees to write their answers on. This will offer a way for people for offer
input on community issues, specifically around race, equity, and inclusion. Commissioner Rog
will generate the questions.
Commissioner Rog suggested having a statement that recognizes the Orlando event—perhaps
have at the HRC table that includes an education piece.
Commissioner Kornblit stated the idea of possibly having a letter of support to the victims of
Orlando that community members could sign, and then send to the Orlando Human Rights
Commission.
Commissioner Gidden asked what the HRC’s presence on social media is and how we could
utilize that for communication with the public.
IV. New Chair Discussion
The Commission decided on having the voting of the new chair to take place at the August
meeting.
V. Meeting Schedule Discussion
The Human Rights Commission voted to cancel the official meeting scheduled for July 19th,
2016 due to the conflicts with the event. It was moved by Chair Curtin, and seconded by
Commissioner Arnold. The motion passed 7-0. The HRC will meet informally towards the end
of July.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:16 p.m.
