Human Rights Commission
Minutes – January 19, 2016
Westwood Room, City Hall
I. Call to Order
Vice Chair Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m.
A. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Katherine Arnold, DJ Hamm, Brian Johnson, Anita Beaton and
Youth Commissioner Will Poulter
Staff: Breanna Freedman
B. Approval of Agenda
It was moved by Commissioner Johnson, seconded by Commissioner Beaton, to approve
the agenda as presented. The motion passed 4-0.
C. Approval of Minutes
It was moved by Commissioner Arnold, seconded by Commissioner Hamm to approve the
minutes of December 15, 2015. The motion passed 4-0.
II. Commissioner and Committee Reports
Commissioner Hamm distributed an excerpt from a book, titled “A Field Guide for
Achieving Equity in Schools” and encouraged all commissioners to read prior to our next
meeting. He will also email this out so that Commissioners not present at the meeting will
have an opportunity to read it.
III. Joint HRC/PAC/MAC Meeting
The Commission discussed having better knowledge of the members from the other
commission/committee. They also discussed different understandings of different
terminology, with a desire to have further clarification and consensus on terminology
used during future discussions.
The Commission discussed the type of event to partner with the Multicultural Advisory
Committee (MAC) and Police Advisory Commission (PAC).
The Commission discussed continuing with its own agenda, and involving MAC and
PAC members, who would be invited to attend the next Coffee and Culture Chat event.
The Commission discussed its interest in having the MAC be a part of the next Coffee
and Culture event planning.
IV. 2016 Work Plan
The Commission discussed when the next Coffee and Culture Chat would be, and agreed
the spring, possibly May, would be a good time.
The Commission agreed that Aquila Elementary School would be a good space for the
next Coffee and Culture Chat event.
V. Annual Boards and Commissions Meeting with Council
Ms. Freedman informed the commission about the Annual Boards and Commission
Meeting with Council on Monday, February 22, encouraging all Commissioners to attend
if possible.
Vice Chair Johnson stated he is working on the report and the presentation for Council.
VI. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 8:02 p.m.
