NO. 670 AUTHORIZING USE OF ELECTRONIC VOTING SYSTEMS FOR ABSENTEE BALLOT VOTING WHEREAS, electronic voting systems have previously been approved for the State of Minnesota, and that currently approximately 400,000 Minnesota voters are utilizing this system for voting and WHEREAS, many of these voters must cast an absentee ballot because they are unable to appear in person at the polling place on election day due to illness, disability, religious discipline or other legal reason and WHEREAS, under current law, these voters must use a paper ballot for absentee voting purposes, which ballot must then be converted to computer readable ballots by election officials, and WHEREAS, said transfer of absentee votes to punch card ballots is a very time consuming and costly process and can contribute to errors in the converting process, and WHEREAS, utilization of the electronic absentee voting system has proved an effective method of processing absentee voting in thirty-six of the thirty-eight states currently utilizing an electronic voting system; now therefore BE IT RESOLVED THAT: 1. The City Council of the City of St. Louis Park does hereby support passage of S.F. No. 722 and H.F. No. 670 authorizing the use of electronic voting systems for absentee voting and urges the legislature to enact this provision into law, and 2. The City Clerk is herewith instructed to transmit certified copies of this resolution to the legislators for the City of St. Louis Park, and to members of the Elections Committee of the State Senate and House of Representatives.
