JOINT CITY COUNCIL/POLICY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
June 17, 1985
Karen Reeves, chair of the Policy Advisory Committee, called the meeting
to order at 6:35 p.m. Those in attendance included Jerrold Martin,
Richard Strohl, Keith Meland, Ronald Backes, Lyle Hanks, Karen Reeves,
Kay Thrall, Sue Knauer, Betty Bothereau, Jim Brimeyer and Cris Gears.
Karen Reeves provided the group with a general overview of Community
Education activities in St. Louis Park and included comments about
the department's recent reorganization plan. Betty Bothereau elaborated
on the staff reorganization by explaining that three full-time positions
had been eliminated and two other positions had been reduced by 25%
each. She also commented that this shift moved more dollars into the
service area and out of administration.
Several Councilmembers commented on the need to identify changing
demands within the community. Ms. Bothereau stated that her staff
had identified increases in Latch Key and pre-school programs to be
an example of increasing needs while further noting that the participation
in senior programs was remaining stable.
After considerable discussion concerning the budget for the Older
Americans program, Council reached a consensus that the City should
increase its contribution for the 1984-85 budget year by $5,300 and
should approve the requested budget for 1985-86 which is an increase
of 6.1% over the preceding year.
Keith Meland and Sue Knauer both made comments regarding the positive
image that St. Louis Park's Community Education Department has developed
through the implementation of innovative programs and by the professional
administration of its staff.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cris Gears
